Matthew is found with his family in the 1860 census of Washington County Virginia.[1] By 1870 the family had relocated to Floyd County Kentucky.[2] According to a nephew, Ivory Arthur Smiley, the family moved to Kentucky in 1867 through the Pound-Gap when their youngest child, Alexander (Ivory's father), was a couple of weeks old. Ivory says they first lived at Mud Creek, Harold, KY and moved to Prater Creek.[3] Another version from Ottawa Boyd was that they left Virginia at the start of the Civil War, going through Pippa Pass.[4]
In 1951 it was noted that he had died in Elkhorn City, KY.[3]
