Research Notes

Note: 1880 Census says born January, 1842. Tombstone says 4 July 1841.
The exact day of burial is uncertain but two articles said to have come from the Gadsden Times News shed some light on it. The first, dated Tuesday, October 11, 1904 confirms the death date but not the burial date.
Obituary
Title: "Mrs. Jane Owens died Wednesday", "Mrs Jane Owens, age about 50 years, died Wed. morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Z. Smith (Viola), on Turrentine St., after a long illness. Mrs Owens had been an invalid for several years and her age, together with a complications or disease was the cause of her death. The internment was made at the Owens Cemetery three miles south of the city and funeral services were held at the cemetery by Dr. J.P. Ralls of this city. Mrs. Owens was highly respected Christian woman and was well known in this county, having lived here for many years past. She leaves three children and a large number of friends to mourn her death".

The age is obviously wrong since she was 63 years of age when she died. The date of the obituary would seem to indicate that she was probably buried the day before or the day the obit was published, thus October 10 or October 11 of 1904.
Another article, dated Friday, October 14, 1904) also mentions her funeral. This article concerns a fight between Samuel Ross and LAJ Owens at the Owens farm. This Samuel Ross was Samuel Jennings Ross, brother to James McClellan Ross (the husband of Esther Lou Owens, the youngest of Jane Owens' children]. It has been said that LAJ Owens, her older brother was very protective of her, even after she married.
"Captain of Police Will Thornton broke up a fight at the Owens farm, Thursday morning, shortly after the funeral of Mrs. Jane Owens, a highly respected member of the Community. Mr. Samuel Ross was escorted out of town by Captain Thornton, following a dispute between himself and farmowner, LAJ Owens. The fight began as Mrs. James Ross, former Miss Esther Lou Owens, and her children tried to leave with Mr. Ross, her brother-in-law. Mrs. Ross is staying at the home of her sister, Mrs. Zimri Smith."
