Biography

Spencer W. Smith was born about 1819 in Louisiana.[1]

He served from Aug 1863 until 1865 in Co. E 6th Ms. Reg. Cavalry and received a pension for said service on 02 Apr 1897 in Smith County, Mississippi.[2]

He married Manervia about 1848[1] and the couple had the following known children:

  1. Tobias Smith was born about 1850 in Mississippi.[1]
  2. Josephine Smith was born about 1853 in Mississippi.[1]
  3. Alwida Smith was born about 1855 in Mississippi.[1]
  4. Salicia Smith was born about 1857 in Mississippi.[1]
  5. Loney Smith was born about 1863 in Mississippi.[1]
  6. Thomas J. D. Smith was born about 1865 in Mississippi.[1]
  7. Sterling P. Smith was born about 1868 in Mississippi.[1]

In 1870 Spencer and family are living in Township 2 Range 7E in Smith County, Mississippi.[1]


NOTE: This is NOT the same man as Spencer Smith 1816-1890 buried in Madison County, New York. Smith is a common surname and indeed if you check the census for 1850-1880 you will find no less than SIX Spencer Smith's born in a five year time span. Basic census research will show you these are two different men, living on opposite sides of the country during the same time period and with totally different children. This is why research and sources are so important, to correct erroneous trees information at ancestry.com, where this error is apparently being propagated. :(
