His father was Col. Lawrence Smith. His mother was Mildred Reade. The will of Lawrence Smith proved in 1738/39 WP York Co VA 1738 p488 refers to his son, Robert three times. "Item: I give & bequeath onto my beloved wife Mildred Smith the neck of land whereas I now live from the mority of Wormelay back up the river to my pasture fence which now is along the said fence to the pasture gate ????? and from thence south five degrees west to the mill swamp during her natural life and then to my son Robert Smith and his heirs forever..." "Item: I give & bequeath my mill to my three sons and my wife during her widowhood but if my wife should marry my will & pleasure is to give my mill to my three sons" 3 sons named are Edmund, Robert, and Lawrence. "Item: I give and bequeath to my loving wife and to my five children which I had by her viz; Margaret, Catherine, Robert, Lucy, and Lawrence and all the remaining part of my estate ..."
The will of Mildred Smith was proved WP York Co VA 21 Jan 1754 p309 ....."I give and bequeath to my loving son Robert Smith my lot of land in Yorktown......" "divided between my son Robert my daughter Lucy and my son Lawrence. Item. I do appoint my loving son, Robert Smith and my brother Samuel Reade"
By 1760, Robert found himself in financial trouble. He sold his inheritance, "Temple Farm" to the husband of his sister, Augustine Moore. The estate is now known as Moore House. Augustine Moore, In his will proved WP York Co VA 1788 p164, mentions the purchase of Moore House from Robert Smith..
Robert 1st married Mary Calthorpe, daughter of Elimelech Calthorpe and Mary Robinson. Robert and Mary were parents of seven children. Mildred born 8th day of September 1754 Thomas Calthorpe Smith born 10th of Sept. 1758 John S. born 7th December 1761 Calthrope born 14th ? September 1767 George R. born 4th of October 1769 Twin of Lucy born 4th of October 1769 Augustine born 20th of September 1775
Mary died shortly after the birth of Augustine. Robert married second to Rachel Kerby. Robert died in 1777, leaving a Will proved WP York VA 1777 p365. "my beloved wife Rachel Smith" . Robert and Rachel were parents of one daughter, Mary Smith.
These eight children of Robert were noted in Bible and land documents recently provided and approved.
