Biography
Alexander McKinlay b 13 June 1877 at 35 Commercial Road, Glasgow. Alexander’s father is not named on the certificate and the register is marked illegitimate. There is no mention of Smith on his birth certificate. He was registered in the name of Alexander McKinlay (his mother's maiden name). His mother is 34 yo cotton drawer Susannah McKinlay, who was unable to sign her name. Source: Hutchesontown 1877, Page 393, Entry 1178

Alexander enlisted as a private in the 3rd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders (#3/6975) on 12/9/1914. He was awarded the1914 Star & Clasp, and the British War & Victory medals. He was transferred to the Army Reserve on 25/4/1919 and demobilized on 31/3/1920. His year of birth is shown as 1874, but his marriage license to Elizabeth Lynn (widow) in Feb, 1911 gives his age as 33 and his occupation as Leather Work Labourer. His daughter (my mother Elizabeth) was born in October 1914, just a month after Alex enlisted. Her birth certificate lists Alex's occupation as Tube Works Labourer and (Private, 3rd Batt. Gordon Highlanders). Died 17 January 1929 in Royal Infirmary, Glasgow of Lobar Pneumonia, 5 days, Chronic Bronchitis, Emphysema. Source: Dennistoun, 1929, Page45, Entry 133
