The Smiths emigrated from Ireland in 1844 and settled on lot 27 concession 6 Ellice Tp Perth County (called the Huron District at that time). The lease was granted on January 11 1845 -(cc83 030 093). Between four and six weeks later Alexander was killed by a falling tree as he endeavoured to shield his son Robert from the tree.

They also later discovered that they had cleared and sown a crop on the neighbouring lot. They were awarded the crop itself, but received nothing for their labour in clearing the land for it.
