Ernest Smith is/was a significant Ontarian .
E.D. Smith was an Ontario politician and businessman who founded the food company bearing his name.[1] E.D. Smith and Sons, Ltd. was the first Canadian company to make jams and jellies commercially.[2]

Born in 1854, he was the son of Sylvester Smith, a grain farmer, and Damaris McGee. He married Christina A. Armstrong in 1886.[3] They had a daughter and two sons.

Smith represented Wentworth in the House of Commons from 1900 until his appointment to the Senate in 1913. After 32 years as a Senator, he retired at the age of 92. He died in 1948.[4] He is buried in Stoney Creek Cemetery.[5]
