Biography

Family stories told to Bruce Brock and recounted in his book about the James E. Smith's family say that during the Civil War, the Stafford family moved in with the Smith family and that is when James (Jim) fell in love with and married Narcissa.

After the war, James opened a shop in Collinsville AL but lost his shop in a fire. He then became a post master and delivered mail by horse. Their grandchildren remembered him as stately, partly bald, and that he spoke with "firmness".

Cause of death: paralysis.
