William Charles Septimus Herbert Smith was born on 4 March 1874 at Parkins Reef Road, Maldon, Victoria, Australia, the son of Jane (King) Smith and William Arrow Smith.^[1]

He was married to Ellen Vince.^{[citation needed]} Their children were:

• William Leonard Smith (1899–1973)
• Frederick Smith (1902–?)
• Dorothy Smith (1904–1994)
• Leslie Smith (1908–1967)

William died on 26 July 1942 in Perth, Western Australia, aged 68 years. His remains were interred on 28 July 1942 at the Presbyterian Cemetery, Karrakatta.^[2]
