David Smith was born about 1760 in South Carolina.[1]
During the Revolutionary War, David Smith served as a private of horse under the command of Capt. Robert Masefield, Col. or Maj. Reid, Col. Pickens, and under Capt. Burnet (?) and Capt. Lawrence in one or two scouts against the hostile Indians.[2]
On 17 Mar 1782 (or possibly 1783), he married Rebecca Lindley in Abbeville District, South Carolina.[3]
In 1807, David and his family moved from Laurens District, South Carolina to Walton County, Georgia.[4]
David Smith appears in the 1820 Census[5] and 1830 Census[6] for Walton County, Georgia.
David Smith died 27 Mar 1833 in Walton County, Georgia[7]and is buried in the David Smith Family Cemetery, present day Barrow County, Georgia.[8] (Note: as of 25 years ago, his house was still there with the cemetery immediately adjacent. Facing the house it was on the left side. Collette-313)

He served for two or three years.His wife, Rebecca, drew a pension on his service, Pension # W-6082, Letters sent on Dec. 31, 1855, from the Comptroller General's Office, Columbia, SC, to the pension office in Washington, DC, showed payments made in 1783-86 to David Smith, Private. Listed on the payroll of Capt. Peter Burns Troop in " Reg't of Light Dragoons" under Col. Wade Hampton, Gen. Sumpters Brigade.
On page 82 of the first census of the USA in Ninety-Six Dist, Pendleton County, SC is the name David Smith. From Cherokee Land Lottery compiled by James F. Smith under the list of Rev. War soliers and widows of Rev. War soldiers is this: "Dist. 9, Sec. 1, Lot 133, David Smith - Certificate of Elijah Clarke, Col. Feb 2, 1784."
David and Rebecca Migrated from Abbeville, Dist. SC to Ninety-Six Dist. (Anderson), SC where David was a part owner in Rinkin Mill. From there to Laurens, Dist., SC where they lived until 1807, then they moved to Jackson (later Walton then Barrow) County, GA.
