Hannah Smith was born in 1845 in Southcoates, a crowded suburb then on the eastern edge of the growing port city of Hull, on the Humber Estuary in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
She is the daughter of James Smith and Mary Ann Hardbattle.
In 1851 Hannah was with her parents and six siblings, in the Southcoates area of Hull, aged . We are not told whether any of the Smith children are at school.[1]
