Biography

Joseph was born April 21 1829 in Indiana to Samuel and Polly Keithley Smith. At the age of 21 was living with his brother, James and James' wife, Nancy Casey Smith; working as a Railroad Contractor. He married Nancy's sister, Jeannette (Gennette) Casey August 5, 1850 in Scott, Indiana. They raised 11 children together. After Jeannette died, he married Elizabeth Caldwell in 1886. She was known as "Aunt Lizzie" to his children. She played a significant role in their lives. He passed away Septenber 16. 1911 in Adel. Iowa.
