Biography

Nathan was born about 1712. He is often confused with his uncle Nathan Smith (b. ca. 1694). He was married to Cassandra Childs in 1735. A probate record of 14 November 1738 indicates that the estate of Cassandra's father (Henry Child Jr.) made a payment to Nathan Smith in right of his wife (daughter of said Henry Child Jr.).

He was the eldest son of Joseph Smith according to Joseph's 1746 will: SMITH, JOSEPH, Calvert Co. 30 Oct, 1746; 19 May, 1763 To eldest son Nathan Smith, plantation where he now dwells, beginning at the spring branch opposite the mouth of the land where it now stands, and adjoining land called Gough's Purchase, alias Turner's Pasture. But Nathan died 5 years after that, so he died before his father died.

Nathan Smith passed away in 1751. A short probate record appears in the Calvert Co., Maryland, records (Liber 28, folio 270: SMITH, NATHAN, Calvert Co.; 24 Nov. 1751), Richard Crosbey & John Elliet, swore before John Smith that the night before he d. Nathan Smith desired that his wife should be possessed with all his e. during her widhood, his son Mordica might have the great table & chest of draws, his dau. Margrett negro boy Ned, & the residue equ. div. among his chldn. 7 April 1752, sworn to by s Crosbey & Elliet.
