Biography

'John S. Smoak was born May 30, 1857, and died August 28, 1908 John married first Mary Endora McAlhany, daughter of Benjamin McAlhany and Elizabeth Bozard. She was born April 30, 1856, and died April 12, 1894. He married second Louisa " Lula " Cynthia Stokes, daughter of William Stokes and Julia Crum Julia was born May 28, 1873, in Barnwell County, South Carolina.

An obituary in the Times & Democrat for the infant son of John and Lula Smoak states that he was three months old and died May 10, 1903. The death date of May 2, 1903, is on the infant's gravestone.

John S Smoak and his first wife, Mary E. McAlhany (" M. E. Smoake" is written on her gravestone ), their infant son, another son, Edwin William Smoak, and an infant son by his second wife are buried together at Sardis Methodist Church Cemetery, Branchville, Orangeburg County, South Carolina.
