Elizabeth Snow, called "Betty Bob" or "Betsie," was born in 1834 in North Carolina. She was the daughter of Bird ("Birdie") Snow and his wife, Elizabeth "Eliza" (Harris) Snow. They were Appalachian farmers and devout "primitive" Baptists. Betty Bob's Snow heritage goes back to England when Thomas Snow and his son "Captain" Henry Snow emigrated from Lincolnshire to Virginia in the early 18th Century.
"Betty Bob" married her neighbor, Thomas W. Cockerham, in Surry County, North Carolina in 1859. He was born on August 8, 1839. They had two children:[1]
Unfortunately Thomas Cockerham was killed during the America's Civil War. He died on June 13, 1862, and his son was born after his father's death.[2] His widow survived him and raised her children with the help of her extended family in North Carolina. She died at her daughter's home in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina, in March 1927. She is buried at the State Road Primitive Baptist Cemetery, State Road Surry County, North Carolina, USA.[3]
