William Sublett, born say 1723, first appeared in the public records when his father Pierre Louis (Peter Lewis) Soblet on 5 Nov. 1754 willed him “one certain tract or parcel of Land whereon I now dwell,” and named him an executor of the will.
Shortly after the probate of the will on 27 Jan. 1755, “William Soblet of Albemarle County” on 22 September 1755 sold this 133 acres located in the old Parish of King William (at this date in the new county of Cumberland) to his brother Peter, reciting that it was the tract “which was granted unto the said William Soblets father Peter Lewis Soblet by a patent bearing date the 13th day of July 1738 and given to his said son William by his last will.”
William’s young wife Susannah relinquished her right of dower. It is probable that William had been for several years a resident of Albemarle County, presumably in that portion which ultimately became Buckingham County, for he had married Susanna Allen of that county sometime prior to 7 Nov. 1751, when Susanna’s father William Allen made his will and mentioned his daughter “Susanna Soblet.”
William Sublett appears to have continued his residence in Albemarle County into the period when this portion had become Buckingham County (1761) and as a consequence [thanks to the destruction of the Buckingham records] there is no record of any land sale by him in the area. On 4 May 1765 Mattox Mayes of the County of Halifax sold to “William Soblett of the County of Charlotte” 220 acres on the north side of “Turnup Creek” in the newly-formed County of Charlotte. But the order books of Charlotte show that even previously, on 1 April 1765, William Sublet was appointed Surveyor of the Roads in his precinct.111 He was joined in Charlotte in 1767 by his brother Abraham and by 1780 by his brother Benjamin. In 1770 he sold his tract “on the north side of Stanton River and on the east side of Turnip Creek” to Joseph Fuqua.
“William Subblett” made his will 13 March 1780 and was dead by 7 August 1780 when it was admitted to probate in Charlotte County. His will is disappointingly brief: “I lend and Bequeath to my beloved Wife Susanner Subblett all the living that I now am possessed of during her Life after her decease I order that Lands negroes with whatsoever may Remain be immediately sold and the money equally divided amogst the children.” The “children,” alas, were not named. Executors were to be John White, Samuel White, and wife “Susanner.” Witnesses were John Weatherford, John Holland, and Phillip Sowel. Samuel and John White renounced their executorships and Susanna assumed the task alone, Charles McKenny and John Wheeler being her securities. [1]
WIlliam was born in 1723. He passed away in 1780.
