Biography

Ann Christiana Somers was born about 1758, most likely in Germantown, Pennsylvania.[1] She was the daughter of Matthias Somers and Mariah Christinah (Null) Somers[2].

She and her parents were among the original group of German families in Philadephia contracted to settle Monckton Township on the Petitcodiac River. Their ship landed at Hall's Creek in present-day Moncton, New Brunswick on June 3, 1766.[3][4] Her father received Lot 7 in the township[5] but died in the early days of the settlement, most likely in 1767.[6] Her mother later married widower Jacob Ricker, Jr. and brought Christiana and her other children into that household.[7] Andrew Somers remained on the original Moncton grant, while the rest of the family went to Hillsborough Township downriver.[8] Christiana married Henry Jones about 1778.[9]

Some online trees state that Ann Christiana (Somers) Jones died November 5, 1837 at Point De Bute, Westmorland, New Brunswick. But she appears in the 1851 New Brunswick Census[10] living with her son Moses’ family in Moncton, age 89 and ‘infirm’.

Notes

  • Her birth year is listed as 1763 on various internet sources, but that seems inconsistent with her position amongst her siblings in the 1766 list. She most likely was born in the late 1750’s, and the exact date remains unknown. In addition, she is listed in the 1851 New Brunswick Census[11] living with her son Moses’ family, age 89 and ‘infirm’. This would suggest a birth year around 1761 if the census was at the beginning of the year.
  • She is listed as “Christiana” in the original 1766 settler list. “Christenah” is named as the wife in Henry Jones/Schantz’s will and some believe this is Christiana Somers. However some internet listings have suggested Christiana married Nathaniel Fales and then George Dobson which casts some doubt on this Somers/Jones connection. The Dobson connection is largely based on a monument in Nova Scotia dating from the 20th century and nobody has reported any primary sources to clear up this confusion.

  • In 1808, Charles Jones (the grandson of Carl Schantz) and his wife Deborah Somers (granddaughter of Matthias Sommer) settled on the Pollett River, at that time in Salisbury Parish. Presumably that is where his son Abner was born four years later. (Charles Jones and his father Henry were buried in the Old Pioneer Cemetery on Grub Road, between Pollett River and Little River.) Possibly married to Henry Jones.

Research Notes

It's been speculated that her maiden name was either Ricker, Sommers or Wortman. Sommers is most likely.

Ricker-814 and Somers-504 appear to represent the same person because: they are the same person. She became part of the Ricker household when her widowed mother married Jacob Ricker Jr.

Les Bowser's book "The Search for Heinrich Stief, A Genealogist on the Loose" (Nimbus Publishing Limited, 2001) has her husband as Henry Jones (Heinrich Schantz). She is one of Les Bowser's ancestors.
