Biography

Henry Somerset, 2nd Earl of Worcester (c.1496-26 Nov 1549) was the son of Charles Somerset, 1st Earl of Worcester and Elizabeth Herbert, Baroness Herbert.

He married twice:

  1. Margaret Courtenay, daughter of William Courtenay, 1st Earl of Devon and Catherine Plantagenet, by papal dispensation issued 15 June 1514. Margaret died before 15 April 1526. Some sources say the union produced no children.
  2. Elizabeth Browne, daughter of Sir Anthony Browne and Lady Lucy Neville,[1] sometime before 1527.

He succeeded his mother as 4th Baron Herbert between 1507 and 21 March 1513. He succeeded his father as 2nd Earl of Worcester on 15 April 1526.

He died on 26 November 1549 and was buried at Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales.

Children of Henry Somerset, 2nd Earl of Worcester and Elizabeth Browne

  1. Lady Anne Somerset d. 8 Sep 1591
  2. Lady Lucy Somerset d. 23 Feb 1582/83
  3. Lady Jane Somerset d. 16 Oct 1597
  4. William Somerset, 3rd Earl of Worcester b. c 1527, d. 21 Feb 1588/89

Research Notes

When he was born the Welsh counties had not been dictated by the English, so he was born in an area controlled by one of the Marcher Lordships, the ancient Kingdom of Gwent, in the cantref of Is Coed.
When he died this same area was in the new county of Monmouthshire.

Magna Carta Project

Henry Somerset appears in Magna Carta Ancestry in a Richardson-documented trail from Gateway Ancestor Mary Johanna Somerset to Magna Carta Surety Baron Saher de Quincy (vol. IV, pages 38-55 SOMERSET). This trail, along with a trail to surety barons Hugh le Bigod and Roger le Bigod, needs further development by the Magna Carta Project. These trails are set out in the Magna Carta Trails section of the Gateway's profile.
  • Needs Development: This profile was just put under management of the Magna Carta Project and needs development against the project's checklist to bring it up to current project standards. ~ Thiessen-117 16:58, 22 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi Michael,

I added a Research Note, and modified the Place of Birth in line with Welsh Categories where I am Team Leader. However, Chepstow was itself an entity in the Welsh Marches. Within the Welsh Project we have not yet tackled the Welsh Marches successfully. Whatever the case, Monmouthshire did not exist when he was born. Others will no doubt argue that the Kingdom of Gent no longer existed either. So until the Welsh Marches have been sorted we will just have to do our best. Perhaps Chepstow, Wales should be place of Birth, (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcher_Lord#/media/File:Wales_14C_Map.png) Steve
