In certificates obtained from Scottish Origins, Birth of Robert Somerville, 24 January 1800, Parish of Clackmannan, County of Clackmannan
James Simmervel Couper in Town & Christian Smith had a lawfull son baptized Robert, the 26th by Mr. Lindsay, Relief Minister here. (Robert’s last name is shown as “Simervil”, in spite of the spelling for the father!)
The spelling could be the result of a slightly illiterate scribe, a linguitistic anomaly, or a dialect misunderstanding. Nonetheless, the descendants are all Somervilles.
On the grave marker in Dundas, Ontario, Canada, his name is given as Somerville. See uploaded image.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Robert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Robert:
Somerville-613 and Simmervel-1 appear to represent the same person because: They have the same birth date, seem to have the same name, and come from the same place.
