Frances Ann(e) Spain was born December 9, 1729, in Bristol Parish, Charles City County, Colonial Virginia, a daughter of Thomas Spain and Mary Martha Haskins. [1] On June 4, 1753, in Amelia, Virginia, Frances married John Mayes (aka Mays). [2] Frances and John became the parents of as many as seven children:

William Mayes/Mays, born between 1755 [3] and 1760, who died 1824, in Whitley, Kentucky, married Obedience Terrell [4]
James Mayes, born 1762, died young in Virginia
Mary Mayes, born 1764
James Mayes, born 1768, died in Kentucky
Frances Ann "Fannie" Mayes, born 1769, died January 8, 1851, in Russell, Virginia, married Hiram Lansford Fields
Mary Mayes, born 1770, in Wake county, North Carolina, died September 8, 1849, in Sumter, Alabama
Frances Anne (Spain) Mayes died in 1821, in Franklin county, Mississippi.
