William Spain was born in 1840 in Ohio and was a lifelong resident of Urbana, Ohio excepting for his years of service in the South during the American Civil War with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

Military Service
During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company E of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 22 years old, single and working as a farmer when he enlisted on 12 May 1863 from Urbana, Ohio. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.[1]
