John was born in Pennsylvania in 1829, the son of John Spangler and Elizabeth keyser. In 1850, John was living with his mother and siblings in Montgomery county, Montgomery, Illinois. His father was not in the home, possibly died?[2] The household included:

John Luther Spangler married four times, according to family records. His first wife was Nelly Carriker (aka Kerriker) with whom he had two sons, Virgil and Charles M.[3] They married on 01 May 1851 in Montgomery, Illinois.[4] Nellie passed away around 1857, possibly in child birth or shortly after.
His second wife was Mahala Edwards whom he married on 05 Aug 1858 in Montgomery, Illinois.[5] They had three children together - William D, Mary (Edith?) Jenette, and Edgar Allen.
By 1860, John and his second wife were living in Hillsboro, Montgomery, Illinois.[6] The household included:
John Spangler M 30 Penn
Mahala Spangler F 19 Illinois
Virgil Spangler M 8 Illinois
Charles Spangler M 2 Illinois
Edgar A Spangler M 0 Illinois
John served in the US Army during the Civil War, enlisting on May 28, 1861 in Cairo, Illinois. He served in Company H, Ninth Regiment of the Illinois Volunteers until mustering out in Jul 1861. He enlisted again on 15 Aug 1862 in Company D, 126 Illinois Volunteers and mustered out 12 Jul 1865 as a Corporal.[7]
John and Mahala were still in Hillsboro in 1870. They had produced two more children - David (aka William D) and Mary. The household now included:
John Spangler M 40 Illinois
Mahala Spangler F 27 Illinois
Allen Spangler M 10 Illinois
David Spangler M 8 Illinois
Mary Spangler F 3 Illinois
Virgil Spangler M 18 Illinois
Charles Spangler M 12 Illinois
According to family records, Mahala divorced John in 1873, moved to Jasper County, Missouri, where she married Croydon Skidmore. John reportedly married Anna Hartman and divorced 9 months later in 1873 in Carthage, Missouri. He married a fourth time to his niece by marriage, Elizabeth Abigail Carriker Todd Lingle, on 18 June 1874. They had no children. In 1900, the couple was living in Roscoe Township Roscoe village, St. Clair, Missouri.[8] The household included:

On 9 Apr 1879, John appeared before the Circuit Court in Montgomery County, Illinois, to apply for an "invalid" pension. He declared he had been working as a carpenter and was healthy at the time of enlistment, but the illness of Erysipelas (a bacterial infection in the upper layer of the skin) contracted from exposure during the Civil War prevented him from obtaining subsistence by manual labor. An affidavit from a witness claimed he was bedridden with badly swollen face, neck and back and blind from the disease. It appears from copies of records from the War department, department of Interior, etc., he had to repeatedly file for pensions over the years. His pension of $30 a month stopped the day he died.[9]
Wife, Elizabeth, died in Roscoe, St. Clair, Missouri, on 11 Oct 1903.
In 1910, the widowed John was living in the home of his widowed daughter-in-law, Laura Luella Hobbs Spangler, who had been the wife of his son, Edgar, in Roscoe, St Clair, Missouri.[10] The household included:

Walter J Spangler Son M 21 Missouri
Roy L Spangler Son M 18 Missouri
Joseph Spangler Son M 16 Missouri
Mildred P Spangler Son M 4 Missouri

After Laura remarried, John went to live with his son Virgil, where he remained until his death.
John passed away in 1915 in Illinois from chronic malaria and old age senility. Burial was in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri.[11]
