Thomas Sparrow 1699. With a crippling disability Thomas was unable to farm. His guardian Thomas Gassawy persuaded him to convey his “very good quality of land” in Anne Arundel in return for £250 and an annuity. On 30 Jan 1730/31 he brought a suit against Captain Thomas Gassaway (is this Galloway?) his guardian for recovery of real property, which was restored to him in 1724. He farmed the land and lived in Annapolis. He bought 100 acres Sparrows Request and sold Kinsey Situate. He became crier of the provincial and county courts and in 1744 doorkeeper of the Assembly. He invented a machine to catch and cure fish for export. At the November 1747 Anne Arundel Court he admitted he was the father of a baseborn child on the body of Matha Freeman and was fined 30 shillings. He married the daughter of John Wooden born 11 Dec 1717. He was an innholder at Annapolis and left a will dated 18 March 1751 bequeathing slaves and his white horse “now breaking at Richard Tydings” and household furniture to daughters Mary and Elizabeth “now living with their grandfather John Wooden of Baltimore County”. [The Headrights by Donna Valley Russell in First Families of Anne Arundel County] To his minor son Thomas was bequeathed the black walnut desk and jappaned case of drawers which I bought of Jonas Green, and bed and bedding. To his daughters a chest of new goods consisting of linen and sugar and the produce of a hogshead of tobacco which I sent last year to have the return in Irish linen. To Rebecca Green, daughter of neighbor Jonas Green, a negro Sarah with the proviso that she be well cared for and have a bottle of rum given her in moderartions for every forty days that she lives and requires it. A milk cow and an anchor of old rum to Jonas Greene and his wife. The residue to son Thomas. His daughters to sell some property to give my son a good education. Daniel Dulany was appointed guardian of son Thomas and joint executor with Jonas Greene. The rum in the 20 gallon jug in my bed chamber to the Well-Meaning Club of which I am a member. Jonas and Anna Catherine Greene, publishers of the Maryland Gazette, acted as guardians of his children. M & D from MD Gazette: Mr. Thomas Sparrow d. 14 Feb. 1753. For years he had been doorkeeper to the Lower House of the Assembly and Court Cryer. Next of kin Joseph and Peter Richardson. Jonas or Josias Green, ex.
