Fanny (Spencer) Count was born in Yorkshire, England.
Fanny was born in 1851. Her parents were John Spencer and Susannah Malkin. [1][2] She was christened on 6 July 1851 at St Marys Church, Tickhill, Yorkshire. [3][4]
In 1861 Fanny lived with her parents and brothers, George, John and Robert at Tickhill, Yorkshire[5]
Fanny was still at her parents home in Tickhill, Yorkshire when the 1871 census was taken. Her father was not a home and his whereabouts are not known. At the family home were Fanny, her mother and her three brothers, John, Robert and George, along with Fanny's cousins, George Malkin and Elizabeth Wardingly and Elizabeth's daughter Ann. The census tells us that Fanny's father was a groom, Fanny and her cousin Elizabeth were domestic servants, and all three of Fanny's brothers were farm servants.[6]
Fanny married Frank Count on 25 December 1873 at St Mary's Church, Tickhill, Yorkshire. Both were of Tickhill and Frank's occupation at Stud Groom. Fanny's father was John Spencer, groom and Frank's father was Charles Count, tailor. Witnesses were Robert Spencer and Hariet Shirttiff.[7]
In 1881 Fanny and Frank lived at 20 George Street, Wombwell, Yorkshire. They had two children George (3) and Charles (8 months) with them when the census was taken. Their eldest child Arthur, age 6, was at Tickhill, Yorkshire with his grandmother, Susannah Spencer. Frank is now working in the coal mines. Lodging with Fanny and Frank were Joseph and Kate Finney.[8]
They still lived in George Street, Wombwell, Yorkshire in 1891, and Frank was still a coal miner. They had four more children, and six of their seven children were at home when the census was taken. They were George (14), Charles (11), Frank (8), Annie (5) (wrongly listed on the census as Mary), John (2) and Rose (1 month). Again, their eldest child Arthur was at his grandmother's home in Tickhill, Yorkshire. Lot Woodcock, a coal miner, was lodging with them.[9]
Sadly, baby Rose, real name Charlotte, passed away the following year. [10]
Fanny and Frank had one more child, Nellie, born in 1895, but the joy of her birth was soon followed by sorrow when Frank, age 45, passed away at the end of that year.[11]
In 1901 Fanny lived at 53 George Street, Wombwell, Yorkshire. Her children, Charles (20), Frank (18), Annie (15), John (12) and Nelly (5) were living with her, along with her grandson, 10 month old Frank Count. [12] Her son Arthur was still living in Tickhill, Yorkshire, and George had married in 1900, Fanny's grandson Frank was the son of George an his wife Emily. Emily was ill following Frank's birth and spent some time in hospital, so Frank was cared for by Fanny. He would remain with her until his early death in 1926,
In 1911, Fanny still lived at 53 George Street, Wombwell, Yorkshire. Her sons Charles and John and her daughter Nellie still lived with her, as did her grandson Frank. [13]
During WWI, Fanny's son John joined the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and was later transferred to the 13th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers. He died of wounds 18 Jun 1917. [14] He was buried at Achiet-le-Grand, Departement du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France, Achiet-le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension. [15][16]
Fanny passed away in 1938, age 87.[17] She was buried on 15 June 1938 in Wombwell Cemetery, Yorkshire[18]
