Biography

Hartford town records show a Hepzibah born 28 December 1707 in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut Colony. Because she appears below an entry for the birth and death of William, son of Samuell and Hepzibah Spencer, the conclusion could be reached that she is the daughter of Samuel and Hepzibah. However, her birth date conflicts with the birth of William (2) (born in Colchester 9 August 1708 - a birth date just a little over 7 months from Hepzibah's birth date. It is improbable that a child that premature in that time period would survive to die at 74. Additionally, Samuell and Hepzibah had, in Colchester, a daughter named Hepzibah born 8 December 1701; she survived to marry and have children. A second daughter named Hepzibah would not have occurred while the first was still living. One possibility is a transcription error in the Hartford record. The dates are similar: 28 December 1707 compared to 8 December 1701. Possible to have made an error in reading an 8 as 28, and to have mistaken the ending 1 for a 7. This could be the same person. Another possibility is that this is a totally separate Hepzibah who was mistakenly entered as a member of the Spencer family. The dates, other than the 28 December 1707 comes from an article in The American Genealogist by Donald Lines Jacobus. His article did not mention the Hartford entry for Hepzibah. It would be most unusual for Jacobus to commit such an oversight.
