Sarah Wheeler Spofford gave birth to ,John on 24 Jun 1678 in Bradford, Massachusetts.

Capt. John Spaffard married Dorcas Hopkinson .on Feb. 15, 1699/1700;. They settled on the "old farm," and both died there. They had six children.

  1. FRANCIS, b. Feb. 19, 1702; m. Priscilla Walcott.
  2. JOHN, b. Mar. 19, 1704; m. Hannah Tyler.
  3. ABNER, b. Aug. 21, 1705; m. Sarah Colman, of Byfield.
  4. SARAH, b. Feb. 21, 1707; m. George Dickinson, 1734.
  5. DORCAS, m. Samuel Bradstreet, Nov. 30, 1736; moved to Lunenburg, 1739.
  6. MARY, m. Jacob Barker, of Andover.

John and Dorcas were admitted to the Bradford church, 11 Mar 1702.

After Dorcas died, John stated intention to marry Sarah Poor on 20 Dec 1717 in Newbury, Massachusetts. They had three children including a son Eliphalet who was our ancestor.. John and Sarah united with the second Rowley church at its formation in 1732. He presided at the first parish meeting on Oct. 5, 1731.

John appears to have been an industrious and thriving farmer. In his will, made about two months prior to his death, in August, 1735, he confirms to his sons, Francis, John, and Abner, deeds of lands,--probably farms which he had already given them,--and makes ample provision for his second wife, Sarah, and "our three little sons."

He died of cancer on Oct. 4, 1735, and lies buried in the old cemetery in Georgetown.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Based on the information on pp. 41 and 45 of the Genealogy of the Spofford family compiled by Dr. Jeremiah Spofford and his daughter, Aphia, plus the additional sources cited on the profile of Francis Spafford (SPAFFORD-253), I believe Francis to be the son of John Spofford IV and Dorcas Hopkinson and have linked John and Francis as father and son. Please contact me if you have any questions or objections, and especially if you have any additional evidence that would indicate this conclusion is incorrect.

Hello, Spofford/Spafford researchers:— Eons ago, I came across information stating that FRANCIS SPOFFORD (a/k/a SPAFFORD) 1702-1785 of Windham, CT (WikiTree Profile: Spafford-253) was the SON of JOHN SPOFFORD 1678-____ of Rowley, MA, and the father (by wife Priscilla Walcott) of Hannah Spafford [Spafford-252] who m. john Martin of Windham and Mansfield, CT. The source was “A Genealogical Record including Two Generations in the Female Line of the Families Spelling their Name Spofford, Spafford, Spafard and Spaford, Descendants of John Spofford and Elizaneth Scott, who Emigrated in 1638 from Yorkshie, England and Settled at Rowley, Essex County, Mass.,” by Dr. Jeremiah Spofford of Groveland, Mass., (Memorial Edition by his DaughterAphia T. Spofford), printed by Alfred Mudge & Son, 24 Franklin Street, Boston, Mass (1888) pp.40 & 45 [1][2]

This book is very old and sources not well identified. Can anyone tell me whether it is still an acceptable source for these relationships, or has it been debunked? I’ve been looking but haven’t found anything yet.
