Biography

Juliana/Juleyanna/Uley Sprecher was born before 1755 (estimated DOD of mother), probably in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Around 1761, her father moved the family to Rowan County, North Carolina.

Juliana's name is seen in records as Juleyanna and Uley. Many details of her life are undocumented but as the Research Notes below indicate, she was probably the daughter of Christopher Sprecher and Maria Ernestina Beck.

Juliana married Jacob Rhudy about 1779 in Rowan Co. Sometime around 1782 they moved to then Montgomery County, Virginia, settling along Elk Creek. In 1793, this area became Grayson County.

Jacob died c1818 and Juliana never remarried. Her estate inventory and sale occurred in October 1825.

Research Notes

Since there are no known birth, baptism or marriage records known for Juliana, attributing her as a daughter of Christopher Sprecher Sr,, or as the wife of Jacob Rhudy, has been historically difficult. Neither of her likely parents left wills. However, circumstantial evidence does support her being both the daughter of Christopher and the wife of Jacob Rhudy.

Perhaps the most widely available historical reference to Juliana is: My German (Swiss) Ancestors IV; Sprecher/Spraker and Allied Families Reichert, Beck, Ringger, by Clifford R. Canfield, 1993 (FHL Title No. 3277145-04). She is named in the book, on p. 4, pp.10-11 and on p. 14:

  1. p. 4 lists Juliana Sprecher Rhudy in the Table of Contents
  2. pp-10-11 provides a list of the children of Christopher Sprecher Sr. but specifically states the list was NOT in birth order. Juliana appears on the list, with no dates, and designated as "born at Schifenthill". That birth place came to Canfield via correspondence with George B. Gose and Ann Rhudy - it was speculative based on a single reference for the baptism of Christopher's son in 1733. However, "Schifenthill" appears to be the name for a congregation and NOT a geographical location.
  3. p. 14 provides "Juliana Sprecher (born in PA?) is thought to be a daughter of Christopher. She married Jacob Rhudy the immigrant. There are several descendants of Christopher Sprecher Jr and Elizabeth named Juliana. This led to the idea that she may actually have been a daughter of Christopher Sr although this has not been proven". Christopher Jr. did have a daughter and granddaughter named Juliana but both were born long after an older Juliana married Jacob Rhudy.

Nothing in Canfield's book mentions a birth date, even an estimated one. And her postulated mother, Maria Ernestina Beck, is last mentioned in records elsewhere in 1755 in Northampton Co., PA, at which time she was probably about 50 years old. That same date is often used as the DOD for Maria Ernestina. At best, we seem to be left with the conclusion that Juliana was born before 1755. And since we know Christopher Sr. was living in Northampton Co. in 1757, we might establish that as Juliana's birth place. Christopher Jr. was only about 17 years old in 1755 and unlikely to be fathering children at that time.

Canfield's book incorrectly identified Jacob Rhudy as an immigrant. In fact, he was born in Pennsylvania and it was his father who was the immigrant. Both Juliana and Jacob would have been too young to know each in PA, but Jacob is found in records for Rowan Co., NC by 1778 and just about exactly when he and Juliana likely married. Jacob and Juliana also left NC and moved to then Montgomery Co., VA at about the same time, c1782, as Christopher Sprecher Jr. The two men lived about 5-6 miles apart for the next 30 years or so.
