Biography

Luke Spruill was born in Tyrrell County, North Carolina about 1775, the 4th son of John (not Read) Spruill and Sarah Currell. He married Sarah (née unknown) about 1803, and had the following children:

  1. Mahala Spruill, b. 24 Jan 1804; d. 24 Jul 1884; m. 6 Jan 1856, John Crayton.[1]
  2. Elizabeth Spruill, b. 25 Sep 1805; d. 14 Apr 1876; m. 13 Oct 1841, John Rhody Allen.
  3. Luke Spruill, Jr., b. 24 Jan 1812, SC; d. 19 Aug 1888, TX; m. 6 Aug 1857, Isabella Ann Jennings.
  4. Hiram Spruill, b. abt. 1813.
  5. William W. Spruill, b. 19 Apr 1816, SC; d. 28 Feb 1868, TX.
  6. Nancy Spruill, b. abt. 1818, SC; d. aft. 1870, TX; never married.

By 1820, Luke had removed his family from South Carolina to Tennessee.

On 12 Feb 1835, Spruill purchased land in Township 12, Marion County, Alabama (son-in-law John Crayton had purchased land there in 1832). Then, moved, along with the Craytons, to the Republic of Texas by 1842. They settled on the San Marcos River in what is present day Martindale, Caldwell County, Texas.[1]

On 5 Aug 1837, Luke purchased 39+ acres Huntsville, Alabama. [Not sure if this is Luke Sr., or Luke Jr.].[3]

In 1850, Sarah, aged 70, was living with her son Luke Jr., Mahala, and Nancy. Living next to them were James W. Spruill, Nancy, his wife, and his children Andrew I., George W., Rosanah E., and Nancy C.. Living near by was son Hiram Spruill, his wife Lucinda, and children John W., Sarah Ann, and Luke Spruill; and daughter Elizabeth Allen and her children, Luke S., Sarah Ann E., William B., George W. and Rhoda M. Allen.[4]

That Luke was not found in the household in 1850 suggests he died before the census was taken on 13 Nov 1850. That same day the Slave Schedule was taken and a Luke Spruill appears with 10 slaves. I assume this is Luke Jr.. Also listed are James Spruill with 1 slave, and Elizabeth Allen with 3 slaves.[5]

No will for Luke has been located.
