Note: A Historical Atlas of Canada indicates that Sorel, Quebec, was founded in 1669 on the St. Lawrence. There were colonists there in 1628, but they were captured by the English. By 1660 there were several thousand settlers. It was a center for trading fish and furs. By about 1760, Sorel had 10 to 25 houses.
The 1926 history of Sorel by Abbe Despres indicates the town's population in 1787 was 316. North of the Riviere Richelieu were descendants of original colonists, Francois-Joseph St. Martin, Charles Mandeville, Antoine St. Martin, two men named Alexis Mandeville, and a widow Batoche St. Martin.
