Pieter Staats with will dated 1774 probate 2 May 1775 says after wife's death, in order that she bring up his daughter Catalyna to whom the estate is left, in event of Catalyna's death to his brother John and brother in law Abm Ditmars. Date of death; 2 Sep 1761, at Brooklyn, Kings, New York,
Alternate Pieter Pietersen Staats died abt. 1714 at Brooklyn, Kings, New York.[15] - this must result from confusion with younger brother Pieter or father Pieter.

Although a number of sites show this Pieter Staats as being the Pieter Staats that died in Brooklyn in Kings County, New York in 1761 (will 4 October 1760, and probated 2 September 1761) with a wife named Rebecca, I do not believe this is accurate. The will of the Pieter Staats that died in 1761 specifically refers to his having a brother named John. The Pieter Stats that married Lammetje Van Vecten did not have a brother named John. This Pieter Staats did have a son named Pieter, however, who was christened at New Utrecht in Kings County in 1721 who did have a brother named John. I believe this is the Pieter who died at Brooklyn in 1761.
OK, we have a secondary source published in 1921 (cited here as "North American Family Histories," but it is actually Genealogy of the Staats Family, by Harold Staats) that identifies his parents, but what was that author's evidence for that identification?
