Biography

Archelaus was a Friend (Quaker) who attended Cedar Creek, Deep Creek, and New Garden Monthly Meetings
This profile is part of the Stanley Name Study.

Archelaus Stanley was the son of Joseph and Mary Stanley of Hanover, Virginia. Born around 1736, Archelaus married Elizabeth Ladd at a public meeting of Friends at Henrico, Virginia, on 4 June1758. The record shows Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Mary Ladd of Charles City.[1] He was appointed overseer for Cedar Creek Monthly Meeting in 1870.[citation needed]

Family

Archelaus and Elizabeth had three children, Agnes, Jesse, and possibly a son Archelaus. The family migrated to Surry, North Carolina 9 March 1776 after granted a certificate to New Garden Monthly Meeting.[2] They were reported received at New Garden 27 April 1776.[3] Archelaus was enumerated on the US Census in Surry County, North Carolin in 1790 and 1800.[4][5] Elizabeth passed away in 1799.[6] Archelaus remarried within the year to Martha Johnson, another Quaker.[7] He passed away in 1807.[8] Archelaus will was recorded in Surry County 8 May 1805. His will proved in Surry County court in November 1808.[9] Beneficiaries of Archelaus' estate were Martha his wife, daughter Agnes, her two oldest children, and his son Jessie Stanley. His son Archelaus was not named in the Will. This could be because Archelaus didn't follow the Quaker faith, or Archelaus could have received his share of the estate prior to the death of his father.[10]

Wondering if this person had a brother Isaac Stanley who died around 1794 in Berkeley Virginia?

Martha, second wife, born in Ireland abt 1740, would have been 60 years old when they married. They couldn't have had more children. Could Johnathon and Solomon been from Martha's previous marriage?

Last Will & Testament, Surry, NC Will Book 3; Pg. 82 (image 108 & 109) Interesting that Wife Martha Stanley, Daughter Agness Stanley, Grandsons Elijah and Archelaus, and Son Jesse Stanley are all mentioned in his will, but no mention of son Archelaus.

No indication that I have found that he ever had sons named Jonathan or Solomon.

See my Note about this story (long paragraph near bottom b4 Sources heading) on "possible" Uncle John's profile?. Yes it seems this is a matter of record.

? I say "possible" uncle because there's no documentation as to whether father Joseph was actually a son of Thomas the immigrant, thereby making Joseph and John "possible" brothers.

I found this buried in in Ancestry.com under the category of "family story". "Archelaus Stanley was one of the 3 Stanley cousins who were taken by force to serve in the French and indian War under Col. George Washington at Winchester, VA in 1756."

The same record included references to Elizabeth Ladd and transcribed MM notes from Henrico MM, Cedar Creek MM, as well as a transcription of his last will.

Is the story about the French & Indian war legend, or fact?

The story is fact. In the article "Colonel Washington and the Quaker Conscientious Objectors" by Peter Brock, it has the story of seven Quakers who were arrested when they refused to comply with militia regulations. The three Stanleys were William, Zacheriah and Archalaus, from Hanover. If that is our Archelaus he would be around 20 years old, which would fit. In the article is the recount of their ordeal written by one of the Quaker men. The article is in the book, "Quaker History - The Bulletin of Friends Historical Association, Vol. 53, No. 1 (Spring 1964), pp. 12-26. You can view it online at JSTOR. Here is the url: https://www.jstor.org/stable/41946431?seq=1#?seq=1

There are also letters written between Washington and the Governor Dinwiddie that discuss what to do with the Quakers. The names are not mentioned though.
