James Thomas Stanley was born at Marden, Kent, in 1844, a son of Charles Stanley and his wife Sarah (Potter). He was shown as living there aged six with his parents and siblings in the census of 1851. Ten years after that, he was still in Marden but lodging with his employer, farmer Henry Bayly, and described as "carter's mate ag. lab.". He married the orphaned Charlotte Baldwin in 1869. They continued to live in Marden for a while, their two sons being born there in 1870 and 1872. They then moved to Five Oak Green in Capel near Tonbridge, Kent, where two daughters were born in 1877 and 1881. I assume that James moved there for employment, being recorded there in the censuses of 1881 and 1891 as a railway plate-layer. Around 1900 James and Charlotte adopted two children, a boy and a girl (see Charlotte's Profile). James reverted to being an agricultural labourer, recorded as such at Five Oak Green in 1901. In 1911 he and Charlotte were noted as living about five or six miles from there at Horsmonden, James still as a farm labourer. He died in 1922 aged 78 and was buried at Capel.[1] (Note to other researchers: this person should not be confused with another James born at Marden, the son of William and Lucy Stanley. That James married Annie Cooper at Marden in 1866 with William being noted as his father.)Oliver-4952 09:29, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
