Biography

The History of Sanford, Maine reflects... "The names of the settlers from 1739 to 1780, arranged by years, are as follows: ---- 1742. Joshua Adams, Wells, laborer; Benjamin Holt, York, coaster; Samuel Staples, laborer. [Page 26] In 1754, at the desire of the proprietors, Jonathan Johnson prepared a list of these lots, having especial reference to the fulfilment of the provisions upon which they were granted. He reported that in thirty-two instances the conditions were either being complied with or wholly fulfilled ; and of the lots owned by the following he said : ---- Samuel Staples occupied numbers twenty six and twenty-seven; { Page 27 } See Settler's Lot Map on page 23 History of Samford, Maine, 1661- 1900. by Edwin Emery, William Morrell Emery

Samuel Staples, house carpenter, corporal, aged forty-nine years, born in Kittery , and Joseph Ayers, laborer, private, aged eighteen years, born in Gorhamtown, residing in Phillipstown, were in Captain Joseph Holt's company, Colonel Ichabod Plaisted's regiment, May 7, 1756, in the expedition against Crown Point, and were at Lake George. They were in camp at Fort William Henry, August 7 and October 11. Their terms of service were from April 22 to December 1 and 8, respectively, thirty-two and thirty-three weeks.

(II) John, second son of Peter (1) and Elizabeth (Beadle) Staples, was born in Kittery, Maine. He married Mary, daughter of Peter and Mary (Renwick) Dixon. His will, made November 21, 1744, was proved July 16, 1745. Children:

1. John, born September 3, 1699, died young.

2. Hezekiah, February 11, 1702.

3. Solomon, June 20, 1705, married Martha Tobey.

4. Samuel, April 11, 1707, married (first) October 2, 1727, Patience, daughter of Thomas More, of York; (second) Mercy, daughter of Nicholas Cane.

5. Hannah, February 8, 1709-10, married (first), June 17, 1736, John Drew, of York; (second) November 12, 1739, Edward Whitehouse.

6. Thomas, January 9, 1711-12, married, November 21, 1733, Sarah, daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth (Gowen) Ferguson.
