Biography

Brian Stapleton, Esq., was the younger son of Brian Stapleton, Knt., and Cecily Bardolf.[1][2][3] His date and place of birth are unknown and are estimated.

Brian was married to Isabel (or Elizabeth) _______ before 4 May 1438, when they were named as legatees in his father's will.[1] The will of Sir Brian gave Brian Stapleton and "Isabel, his wife, 20 l. per annum to be paid by Miles his son and heir, out of the manor of Cotherston in Yorkshire".[4]

Brian and Isabel had one daughter:[5]

  • Elizabeth, born about 1440, wife of John Richers, Esq.

Brian held lands in Ingham, Crisping's and Hasilden, Norfolk.[1]

He was lieutenant to John Holand, Duke of Exteter, in 1443.[1] That year, he and his brother Miles received the thanks of the Privy Council in connection with a riot at Norwich.[6] On 4 March 1443 the King's Council ordered Letters of Thanks be made out to the Duke of Norfolk, William Calthorpe, Miles and Brian Stapleton, Thomas Brewes, sheriff, and others, "for their diligence in finding out the rioters and misdoers at Norwich." Chief Justice Fortescue was sent down to try the prisoners.[7]

Brian was left a silver goblet in the 1447 will of his cousin, Joan Bardolf, Vicomtess Beaumont.[1]

Brian died between 1461/2 and sometime before 1467.[1] A Stapleton family lawsuit of 1470 proves that Brian died without male issue.[3]

Research Note

In 1462, a Brian Stapleton was granted the manor of Kessingland, Suffolk, by his brother, Sir William Stapleton.[8] The identities of Brian and Sir William are unknown. Several sources incorrectly state that the Brian Stapleton of this profile was granted those lands by his brother, Myles.[3]

I will soon be developing this profile as a part of a Magna Carta trail from Gateway Elizabeth (Haynes) Cooke to several surety barons. See the trail HERE,

I wish I had known that you were developing this profile sooner!!! I have a lot of great sources you can find on his brother Miles's profile... it turns out the brothers sometimes acted in concert. POL doesn't cover the period for MPs so I had to go to other places so Brian may show up but I don't know.

If I find anything else I will send it to you when I get to his father Bryan this week.

I have no personal interest in this trail and only decided to work on the Haynes trail today. You can feel free to work on this and the other Stapleton profiles, Darrell. I won't get to them for another week or so at least. The Haynes and Barnes trails converge at some point, so you can work on the older profiles if you have the time/inclination and I will move on to something else.

I will add any sources to the comments within this profile in one location so that when you do get to him it will be there. One I know for sure is Blomefield in the Ingham section.

Darrell,

To clarify: I will develop this profile (Stapleton-84) and you can work on his brother Miles' profile (Stapleton-775). I will stop work on the Haynes trail when I complete this profile, as the Barnes and Haynes trails converge at Miles and Brian's father, Brian Stapleton-82. Then, you can go ahead and complete the profiles on the Haynes/Barnes trails that are marked "BARNES TRAIL" here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Haynes-2099#Magna_Carta_Trails (same profiles are in the Barnes trail here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Barnes-3571#Magna_Carta_Trails).
