Research Notes

Note by descendant: This would be the correct person in my line of Stapps, given the expected percentage of DNA I share with Abraham II.

The following notes are from his FamilySearch page with sources.

Abraham Stapp 1650 - 1714 is thought to be the first of our ancestral line in America. He left an indelible mark on the records of colonial Virginia, as he established a family and developed a successful tobacco plantation in the primitive area of the tidelands of Chesapeake Bay in 1670. Page 1.

Elijah Stapp 1783 - 1842 was a direct descendant in the fifth generation, born in Orange County, Virginia. He married Nancy Shannon in Kentucky, moved to Missouri by 1818, and to Jackson County, Texas by the early 1830s. Descendants and relatives lived in Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, Texas, Kansas, Florida and elsewhere.

There is confusion about the Abraham Stapps. Some say that there is a Sr. and a Jr. Tot gave this information: Abraham, born abt. 1620 (probably in England). Found in Essex, Virginia with a son, Abraham Jr. (variant spelling Stap). Abraham Jr. born abt. 1650 in Essex, Virginia. Will made 4/8/1714. Married Dorthy Moss, daughter of Robert and Rebecca Wales Moss.

I believe that there are two Abrahams, but Abraham Jr., did not figure in this lineage. I believe Abraham Sr., born 1650 married twice, first to Dorothy North and then to Dorthy Moss.

He was a Tobacco Planter in Old Rappahannock, Virginia.

Abraham Stapp was the son of Joshua Stapp who resided in Henrico, Virginia in 1679. Morris & Jarretts of West Virginia. By Beeler and Bishop.

From Culpeper County to the Teays Valley. By Mildred C. Gibbs. Joshua Stapp (or Stepp) "was a son of Abraham and Dorothy (Moss) Stapp (or Stepp) of Essex, Virginia."

Abraham made his will 10/20/1710 and it was recorded 4/18/1714. Henry Scalf wrote a book about this family which is both a help and a problem for us.

Abraham's children were Abraham Jr., William, Jacob, Joshua, Joseph, James, Ruth, Rebecca, and Martha. Joshua was the most prominent and according to Scalf was born about 1688. He lists his marriage to Martha Coffey as occurring in 1709/10 and her birth as 1690. We know this is not possible as Martha couldn't have been born before 1702 as we have previously seen. I have studied the information provided by Mr. Scalf and although no proof is given I will acknowledge that Joshua Stapp could have been born by 1688. However, I can see no reason why he needed to be married by 1709 or 10 and start having children.

Indeed, the information given would tend to fit better if the first children were born in the 1720's. I would tend to place the marriage of Joshua and Martha as occurring about 1718 - 1721 and the first child born about 1720 - 22. This is where it helps to place Martha Coffey's birth in 1702, not 1704 or even 1708 as some have it.

If the above conclusions are not true, then it seems to me that the only other alternative is to look at Martha as a second wife of Joshua. There seems to be no evidence for this however." James Bluford Coffey. His Ancestors and Descendants in America. By Marvin D. Coffey, page 23.

Settled near Piscatawy Creek on the Rappahannock, now Essex County and was a Tobacco Planter.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Abraham by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Abraham:
