Nathaniel was born on August 9, 1668 on Nantucket to Nathaniel Starbuck and Mary Coffin.[1][2][3]
His parents were early settlers of Nantucket Island and his older sister Mary was the first English child born on Nantucket.Sherborn, Nantucket Island |
In 1690, when Nathaniel was about twenty-two years old, a group of Nantucketers was gathered on a hill overlooking the ocean where some whales were spouting and frolicking. One of the islanders nodded toward the whales and ocean beyond. “There,” he said, “is a green pasture where our children’s grandchildren will go for bread.” In fulfillment of the prophecy, a Cape Codder, one Ichabod Paddock, was subsequently lured across Nantucket Sound to instruct the islanders in the art of killing whales.[5]
His parents established an outpost on the Island for trading with the Wampanoag and when his father died in 1719 he was doubtless one of the wealthiest if not the wealthiest individual on the Island. He owned three full shares of land having purchased a share from Stephen Greenleaf.[4] His mother was one of the most influential Islanders and throughout the 17th century, English Nantucketers resisted all efforts to establish a church on the island, partly because a woman named Mary Coffin Starbuck forbade it. It was said that nothing of importance was undertaken on Nantucket without her consent. Whenever an itinerant minister arrived in Nantucket intending to establish a congregation, he was summarily rebuffed by Mary Starbuck. In 1702 it was his mother's conversion to Quakerism that established the unique convergence of spirituality and covetousness that would underlie Nantucket’s rise as a whaling port.[5]
Nathaniel married Dinah Coffin on November 20, 1690 in Nantucket.[6] Dinah was the daughter of James and Mary (Severance) Coffin. James Coffin was the son of Tristram Coffin and the brother of his mother Mary Coffin. Dinah and Nathaniel were first cousins.

Nathaniel and Dinah had seven daughters and three sons all born in Nantucket:[7][8]
Nathaniel was a blacksmith. From the Nantucket Historical Association we learn, "from the probate records that Nathaniel Starbuck, Junior, was not a sea-faring man that this alleged letter represents him to be, and it is not at all likely that he ever made a prolonged voyage anywhere. An order of the court dated June 20, 1707, mentioning him as an administrator of the estate of Peter Coffin, calls him a blacksmith. His own will, executed on the 7th of the 4th month, 1742, also gives his occupation as blacksmith."[19]
In addition to naming his occupation as "blacksmith" Nathaniel's will names his Smith shop, Taylor shop, wharf and warehouse. He also owned land on Nantucket Island, Martha's Vineyard, Chapaquitic Island and Newport, Rhode Island in addition to his "trading post". While he might not have been a "whaler" himself he makes reference to his "Fishing & Whaling" boats and voyages around the Island and the shoals. It does appears he funded these enterprises on the Island.[8]
Nathaniel died on February 9, 1753 in Nantucket.[20]
Nathaniel made his will on the 7th day of the 4th month of 1742 and it was probated on November 4, 1753.[8]
