Paul Starbuck was born the eldest son of Nathaniel Starbuck and Dinah Coffin on October 29, 1694 on Nantucket Island.[1]
From Philbrick in Away Off Shore we read that Paul's father and grandparents built a commercial business providing basic supplies to the Islanders. "As the whaling fishery began to dominate island life, Starbuck provided candles, molasses, kettles, shoes, boards, jackknives, stockings, buttons and calico in exchange for "oil and bone" from whaling either "alongshore" "or in the Deep" ".[2]
There was a local myth that Paul's father traveled to China and brought tea back to the Island. This was not true. His father Nathaniel was a blacksmith. From the Nantucket Historical Association we learn, "from the probate records that Nathaniel Starbuck, Junior, was not a sea-faring man that this alleged letter represents him to be, and it is not at all likely that he ever made a prolonged voyage anywhere. An order of the court dated June 20, 1707, mentioning him as an administrator of the estate of Peter Coffin, calls him a blacksmith. His own will, made on the 7th of the 4th month, 1742, also gives his occupation as blacksmith."[3]

In addition to naming his occupation as "blacksmith" his father's will names his Smith shop, Taylor shop, wharf and warehouse. He also owned land on Nantucket Island, Martha's Vineyard, Chapaquitic Island and Newport, Rhode Island in addition to his "trading post". While he might not have been a "whaler" himself he makes reference to his "Fishing & Whaling" boats and voyages around the Island and the shoals. It does appears he funded these enterprises on the Island.[4]
From his father Paul received "my part of the Wharf and my Warehouse at the foot thereof and the land or the beach it stands on I also give him all the part of the old lott that was my fathers excepting three acres on the north side thereof I do also give him one half of all my part ... that I have in all of the lands of the Island of Marthas Vineyard & Chapaquitic"[4]
Paul likely worked in the family business. He had brothers and sisters Mary (b. 31 Dec 1692), Prissilla (b. 25 Oct 1696), Elizabeth (b. 27 Nov 1698), Hephzibah (b. 08 Nov 1700), Abigail (b. 28 Aug 1704), Benjamin (b. 16 Sep 1707) , Tristram (b. 18 Jun 1709) Ruth (b. 24 Dec 1714) and Anna (b. 12 Nov 1716).[5]
Paul married Ann Tibbets in 1718.[6]
Paul and Ann had children all born on Nantucket Island:
His wife Ann died on July 29, 1736 shortly after the birth of their daughter Ann.[16] Paul married again to Kezia (Folger) Gardner on December 29, 1737.[17] Paul and Kezia did not have any children.[5] Kezia died on October 2, 1749.[18]
Paul remarried for the final time to Elizabeth (Coffin) Stretton on October 28, 1751.[19] They had one child, a daughter named Dinah that was born on October 22, 1752.[20] Paul died after Dinah's birth in 1759[21] and Elizabeth is named as his wife in his will.[22]
In 1747 Paul is listed as one of the selectmen of the town of Sherbourne on August 12th when he signed a petition to the Massachusetts Governor William Shirley in regards to a dispute with a local Indian man named Paul Quaab.[5]
Paul died in 1759 on Nantucket Island.[21]
Paul made his will which was probated on June 1, 1759 in Nantucket, Massachusetts.[22]
