In 1855, after the death of his father, Peter III, Harry K and his wife took over the family farm in Westford, Vermont. Their six children were born and spent there childhood there. Later, like many New Englanders of their era, they moved west; in 1878, H.K. Sterns (aka Stearns) and his family settled in Michigan, where his wife, Luthera Gibbs' family of origin lived.
