Thomas Arthur Steitz was born, in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on 23 Aug 1940, the son of Arthur Steitz, who was in charge of personnel at the Milwaukee County Hospital, and Catherine (Brown) Steitz.^[1]

He graduated in 1962 from Lawrence College in Appleton, Wisconsin, and received his Ph.D. from Harvard Unitversity in 1966 in biochemistry and molecular biology, and he then spent three years at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England. He joined the faculty at Yale in 1970.^[1]

Steitz shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009 for "his discovery of the exact size, shape and position of every atom in the ribosome, the large molecule that is the site of such crucial protein synthesis."^[1]

Tom died of pancreatic cancer on 9 Oct 2018 at Branford, New Haven, Connecticut. He was survived by his wife, son, two grandchildren and four siblings.^[1]
