Franziska was born in 1859 in Hoješín in what was Bohemia, Austrian Empire but is now the Czech Republic. She was the daughter of Vaclav Stepanek and Anna Patek.[1]

She emigrated from Bohemia in 1885, arriving in Baltimore, Maryland on the ship Nurnberg[2]. She relocated to New York City where she worked as a midwife in the Yorkville neighborhood of Manhattan (east 70s), which was home to a large Czech immigrant community.

In 1890, Franziska married Tomas Haller, a widower with four young children[3][4]
