David was born at 530 North 4th St., in 1892 in Reading, PA, son of James Hervey and Mary Dodds Sternbergh. Shortly after his birth, the family moved into Stirling mansion on Center St.
David traveled extensively with his family as he was growing up, voyaging to Europe by steamship. His parents were especially fond of travel in Germany, Switzerland, France, and Scotland. They often spent summers in Vermont as well.
For some years, David worked in automotive manufacturing at his father's company, American Dye & Tool Co. in Reading.
In 1914, David married Ruth Votey of Burlington, Vermont. [1] They had five children, all raised in Pennsylvania. For some years, David grew peonies for sale at his farm in Sinking Springs.
In the 1960s, David owned and ran Playland Motel in York, Pennsylvania.
After Ruth's death, David married his cousin, Doris Dodds Upton, who was also widowed. [2] They divided their time between her home in North Hero, Vermont, and a winter home in Sarasota, Florida.
