Biography

Gideon Stetson, Jr., was a son of Gideon Stetson and Nancy Thayer, born 22 May 1791 in Belchertown, Massachusetts. His birth was recorded in the town records of Amherst, Massachusetts.[1] His birth and death records indicate his place of birth as Belchertown, Massachusetts, but the 1855 Massachusetts census shows that he was born in Amherst, Massachusetts. The two towns are adjacent.

Gideon Stetson, Jr., was a farmer. He and his wife, Clarissa Henry, had 10 children.

The 1850 U.S. Census recorded 59-year-old farmer Gideon Stetson in Shutesbury, Massachusetts, with Clarissa Stetson, age 55, James Stetson, 26 and also a farmer, Eliza J. Stetson, 17, William Stetson, 15, Adaline Stetson, 11, and Frances Fales, 14. All were born in Massachusetts. Gideon Stetson had $3,500 in real estate. The three younger Stetson children and Frances Fales all had attended school within the year. [2]

In September 1855 the Massachusetts State Census recorded Gideon Stetson, age 63, in Shutesbury, with Clara Stetson, 60, James Stetson, 32, and Adaline M. Stetson, 16. Gideon and Clara were listed with a birthplace of Amherst; James and Adaline were listed as born in Shutesbury.[3]

He died in Shutesbury, Massachusetts, on 22 February 1867 is buried there in the Stetson cemetery, which FindAGrave calls the Luther Henry Tomb Yard.
