Biography

Janet Steven was born 1 Apr 1782 to James Steven and Agnes Colvin in St. Quivox Parish Scotland ^[1]. She was the second of 8 children.

According to Parish records, Janet married James Wilson in Coylton, Scotland on the 3 Apr 1808 ^[2] Together they had the following children:

1) Agnes b. 17 Feb 1809 ^[3][4]

2) John b. 13 Feb 1811 ^[5]

3) Jean b. 26 Jan 1813 ^[6]

4) William b. 16 Mar 1815 ^[7][8]

5) Alexander b. 17 Sep 1816 ^[9]

6) James Stevenson b. 17 Nov 1818 ^[10][11]

Death and Legacy

Her death on Family Search is reported as 3 Jan 1826 ^[12] Her description on the Source Record was "Spouse of James Wilson from Shore house Fulton Maybole"

Research Notes

In 2013, Thomas Baillie opened Janet Steven's profile. Apparently, at the time he listed his source for Janet's husband, James D.o.b. as from Scottish Parish Church Records, but did not provide a link.

Janet's records are important as there is another James Wilson listed in church records who married a Jane Lusk. This James Wilson was socially prominent, born in the same area and had 11 children, 2 children being listed with the same names as this Wilson family. ^[13]Janet Steven is the deciding factor while researching which Wilson is the correct ancestor.

Conflicting sources?

She is listed in Family Search ^[14] where the Source records her Birth 6 May 1789, christened on the 10th in St. Quivox. This conflicts with the records stored by Scotlands People.

DNA

As we do not have the appearance of cousins on the side researching their lineages nor Y-DNA or mt-DNA uploaded into the profile, Janet's profile is the only means to differentiate between the two Wilsons' families.
