Lieutenant Henry Steward served in the United States Civil War.

Henry Steward was a Civil War Veteran.

Enlisted in Company D, Illinois 17th Infantry Regiment on 25 May 1861. 1st Serg.

Promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant on 18 Feb 1863.

Mustered out on 15 Jun 1864.

He kept a diary during the Civil War, which is kept by the Watertown Library. He mentions sending and receiving letters from his Aunt Zilpah.

He married Mary E. Colburn, the daughter of Abraham Colburn and Harriet Averill. They had the following children:

  1. George Henry C. Steward 1873–1955
  2. Mary T. "May" Steward 1875–1895
