Biography

Augustine Steward, or Austen Styward, has a page on the History of Parliament website. [1]. He was Mayor of Norwich in 1540, 1543 and 1556 and Deputy Mayor in 1549.

"He made his Will on 9 Oct. 1570, asking to be buried in St. Peter’s Hungate ‘where my well-beloved wives are buried’. After bequests to churches and to St. Giles’s hospital, Norwich, he divided his property between his children. He appointed as executors two sons and as supervisors six ‘sons-in-law’, including John Aldrich, Thomas Layer†, and Thomas Sotherton. He attended his last meeting of the Norwich assembly early in 1571, but he was replaced as one of the aldermen in April of that year and his will was proved in the following November".

PCC will for him in 1571: Austen Styward or Stywarde, Alderman of Norwich. It mentions his two wifes already buried in St Peter Hungate, and that he was born in St George Tombleland, Norwich. He mentions the church of Swarston, where his manor of Gowldethorpe (Or Cowthorpe) hall is, and he also mentions his manor of Wellbourne. Instead of only small amounts for the poor, he makes big donations for the reparations of a wide range of churchs. Son and main heir is William. Another son is Thomas. Edward is a son under 21. Elizabeth and Faith are unmarried daughters. He also treats Thomas Parker a bit like his younger children. He names sons-in-law: Thomas Sotherton, alderman, Robert Woode, alderman, Raphe Shelton, esquier, Thomas Layer, alderman, John Sotherton and John Aldriche. William and Edward to be executors.

Research Notes

Douglas Richardson names Cecily Steward as the second wife of Ralph Shelton, Esq., whom he married after his first wife died in October 1562. Richardson says that Ralph and Cecily had two sons, but does not name them.[2]

Strangely enough, I was in the USAF and stationed at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk Co. England. At the time I had no knowledge that many of my ancestors were from Suffolk Co. and I am genetically 91.2% English and 8.8% Italian (been to Italy also)

I and some friends went to Norwich often to go pubbing (bar hopping) when we were off duty. I had a wonderful experience in England except for the times I was deployed to some hell hole trying to restore order and defeat our nation's enemies. I remember that during the time I was in England I felt a very strong attachment to English culture and completely at home. An awesome time in my life. Augustine is my 13th gg-grandfather.
