Maj.-Gen. Sir Herbert Stewart was born on 30 June 1843.1 He was the son of Reverend Edward Stewart and Louisa Anne Herbert.3 He married Georgina Janet Stirling, daughter of Admiral Sir James Stirling and Ellen Mangles, on 19 December 1877.
He was invested as a Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.). He held the office of Aide-de-Camp to HM Queen Victoria.
He fought in the Battle of Metammeh on 16 February 1885.
He died on 16 February 1885 at age 41 at Egypt, killed in action.
