Biography

Alexander (Stewart) Stewart VIth of Garlies is a member of Clan Stewart.

Alexander Stewart was born about 1551 in Garlieston, Wigtownshire, Scotland. He was the son of Alexander Stewart and his wife Katherine Herries. His father died in 1571, never holding the title Laird Garlies, Alexander inherited the title from his grandfather, and became 6th Laird of Garlies. Some sources list him as 6th.^[1]

Knighthood

Sir Alexander was knighted by King James VI in 1590^[2] at the coronation of his consort, Abbe (Anne?) of Denmark.

Death

He died 5 October 1596 or 6 October 1597, and was succeeded by his eldest son, Sir Alexander Stewart, 1st Earl of Galloway.^[3]

Marriage

Sir Alexander Stewart, 6th of Garlies, married first, Christian Douglas, daughter of Sir William Douglas, of Drumlanrig.^[4]

He married second, the Lady Elizabeth Douglas, daughter of David, Earl of Angus, and widow of Robert, Lord Maxwell.^[5] There were no children from the marriage to Alexander. Found on page 159 of reference ^[1]
