Harriotte Stiling was born in 1819 to yeoman farmer, John Stiling and his wife, Grace Brock.[1] Harriotte was baptised on the 24th of June 1819 in the parish of Tiverton [1] and grew up on West Barton Farm, Cadeleigh, Tiverton.[2]

In 1840, her sister Sarah married Thomas Leaman, a young widower and Mayor of Tiverton. On the 1841 census, Sarah was recorded staying with them on St Andrew Street and her occupation as 'F.S.' - female servant. [3] (It is unclear whether she was employed as her sister's servant.)

Early Marriage

She married George Wreford, a butcher, May 26th 1845 at Cove Chapel, Tiverton (Chapel of St John the Baptist) - both residences at the time were given as Tiverton, but as Tiverton was a large parish they could also have resided in villages of the area. (The banns had been read for the three weeks preceding the marriage - 27th April, 11th and 18th May 1845.)[4][5][6]

Soon after, Harriotte had her first child, Francis - baptised 4th November, 1845.[7] which means she would have been pregnant at the time of her marriage. [The 1851 census states he was born in Witheridge, however a baptismal record there has not been found, nor has a birth registration. Also the same census states Harriotte was born in Witheridge, whereas she was baptised in Tiverton (her family home of West Barton was in the Tiverton district.][8]

George and Harriotte's second child, Drusilla was born in 1847 [she was recorded (perhaps mistranscribed) as Dorothea on the 1851 census although there is also a Drusilla Wright staying there as a 'butcher servant'].[8][7] [Her baptismal record has not yet been found.]

Ellen was baptised 21 April 1848 in the parish of Witheridge. [9][10]

Matthew was born in 1849 and baptised in Witheridge as 'Matt' on December 30th.[11]

Sadly, little Ellen died in 1850, aged 2. She was buried in Witheridge on the 7th of August. [12]

1850s

In 1851, the family were recorded on the census as living in Witheridge in, simply, a 'house'.[8]

Later that year, Harriet was born. She was baptised on the 19th of October.[13]

Then came George, baptised on the 22nd of May 1853[14], William, baptised 7th of June 1854[15], Sarah Grace Stiling, baptised 12th of October 1856[16] and Augusta, baptised 31st of October, 1858.[17]

Sadly, in 1858 while Harriotte was pregnant with Augusta, their 6-year-old Harriet died and was buried on the 5th of May in Witheridge.[18]

1860s

In 1861, Harriotte's husband George Wreford was briefly gaoled for bankruptcy. It is perhaps because of this, that the family eventually decided to start anew in another place.

On the night of the 1861 census, ,the children were at home in the Commercial Inn in Tiverton. 14-year-old Drusilla was in charge as neither of the parents were home (see Research Notes).[19]

Their final child, Anne Howard (named Mary Ann Howard on the Wreford Pedigree) was born on the 23rd of December 1862. She was baptised early the next year, in St Paul's, Tiverton on the 14th of January.[20][7]

A few years later, in 1864, the Wrefords emigrated to New Zealand aboard the ship, Bombay. They departed London on the 26th of November 1864 and arrived at Auckland on the 18th of March 1865.[21]

The Wreford Pedigree indicates that the youngest daughter, Ann (or "Mary Ann Howard"), died on the voyage - no other record of death has been found.[7]

New Zealand

Harriet died in New Zealand in 1892. She is buried with her husband in the Waikaraka Cemetery, Auckland.[22][23]

Research Notes

Appears on Table F2 of the Wreford Pedigree

Have been unable to find George or Harriet on the 1861 census. George seems to have been in debtor's prison at the time but doesn't seem to appear in the prison census. Their children are taking care of the 'Commercial Inn' back home in Witheridge.

  • The passenger list for the ship Bombay has the following Wreford entries [21]:
  1. George Wreford, 44
  2. Harriet Wreford, 45
  3. Frank Wreford, 18
  4. Druscilla Wreford, 17
  5. Matt Wreford, 14
  6. George Wreford, 11
  7. William Wreford, 10
  8. Sarah Wreford, 8
  9. Augusta Wreford, 5
  10. Ann Wreford, 1
  • Ann Wreford is likely the 'Mary Ann Howard Wreford' referred to on the pedigree as having died on the journey.[7]
