Biography

Benjamin was born on 4 March 1843 in Knox County, Ohio. He was the son of Joel Stilley and Eliza Bevans.

By 1850, the family lived in Liberty Township, Knox County, Ohio, where his father farmed. Benjamin was listed in the 1850 census as age 8.[1] Benjamin was listed in the 1860 census as age 17.[2]

On 17 September 1861, Benjamin enlisted in the Union Army of the Civil War as a private in Company G, 20th Regiment, of the Ohio Infantry. He participated in the engagements at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Kennesaw Mountain and Sherman's march on Georgia. He mustered out on 15 May 1865.[3][4]

Benjamin married Mary E Litzenberg on 31 December 1867 in Knox County, Ohio.[5] They were the parents of at least three children, two that lived to adulthood.

By 1870, Benjamin and his wife Mary were living in Marion Township, Henry County, Iowa, where he worked as a carpenter. Benjamin was listed in the census as age 27.[6]

By 1880, Benjamin lived with his family in Exeter Township, Fillmore County, Nebraska, where he worked as a grain dealer. He was listed in the census as age 42 with his wife Mary (age 36), and son Herbert (age 3).[7]

By 1900, Benjamin lived with his family in Walker Precinct, Lincoln County, Nebraska, where he farmed. He was listed in the census as age 57 along with his wife Mary (age 56), and daughter Nona (age 14).[8]

Benjamin died on 28 February 1905 in Nebraska. He was buried at Farnam Cemetery in Farnam, Dawson County, Nebraska.[9]
