Biography

Notables Project
Frank Stilwell is Notable.
Frank Stilwell was involved in the "Wild, Wild West," part of the westward expansion of the United States. Join the Wild Wild West Project.

One time Cochise County Sheriff, suspected stage robber and assassin of Morgan S. Earp. Frank Stilwell was an underling of Cochise County Sheriff John Behan and a friend to the outlaw gang known as the "Cowboys." In the summer of 1881, Stilwell was a supect in a fatal stage holdup. On March 18, 1882, Morgan Earp, Wyatt's younger brother, was gunned down while playing billiards. Stilwell was one of the suspected assassins. Three day later, on the night of March 21, Wyatt Earp and his posse supposedly caught up with Stilwell at the Tucson railyards. Shortly after sunrise the next morning, workers found Stilwell's bullet-riddled body near the tracks, one hundred yards north of the station. Originally, Stilwell was buried in the old city cemetery. But as the city grew, the cemetery had to go. Most of the bodies buried there were re-interred at Evergreen Cemetery, in a mass, unmarked grave, thought to be at the back of the cemetery, although, the office at the cemetery has no record of such a grave.
